10th International OTEC Symposium

Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

 

Excipio was honored to present at 10th International OTEC Symposium, held December 4–5, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

​

Under the guidance of the Ocean Thermal Energy Association (OTEA), the symposium was organized by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, in cooperation with other Brazilian universities and institutions, with support from SOBENA (Brazilian Society of Naval Engineering).

​

Excipio Energy’s CTO and co-founder, Roy Robinson, presented the results of Excipio’s Proof of Concept Study for Enhanced Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (E-OTEC), underscoring our role in advancing innovation for the blue economy.

9th International OTEC Symposium Houston, USA

​

Excipio Energy was proud to host the 9th International OTEC Symposium in Houston, immediately following the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

 

In collaboration with the Ocean Thermal Energy Association (OTEA), the event brought together 60 of the world’s leading OTEC researchers in person and 80 participants joining virtually.

​

Attendees represented key OTEC nations including the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, the United Kingdom, and France. A successful two-day symposium at Greentown Labs highlighted Houston’s innovation and OTC experience.

As a founding member of Greentown Labs’ Houston expansion, Excipio worked alongside entrepreneurs, researchers, and industry leaders to help strengthen the city’s growing energy transition ecosystem.

 

We built connections and expertise that led to the early development of E-OTEC, our innovative approach to advancing sustainable ocean energy.

U.S. Department of Energy Award

Marine Energy Research

​

Excipio Energy was selected as one of twelve small businesses to receive a Phase I grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office in 2020.

Led by Principal Investigator Roy Robinson, the project focused on Gulf of Mexico Energy Infrastructure Re-use and Blue Development, exploring how decommissioned offshore platforms could be repurposed to support marine energy and other blue economy applications.

​

Through this Phase I award, Excipio advanced concepts for using these structures as a foundation for deploying marine energy technologies to power seawater desalination, hydraulic pumping, and energy storage.

InnoSTARS Competition

China, 2019

​

Excipio Energy was a finalist in the InnoSTARS competition, organized by the US–China Innovation Alliance (UCIA) to connect innovative U.S. companies with global partners.

 

Excipio was hosted in China in November 2019 for the final competition. Our Excibuoy concept placed second in the energy category, finishing just behind V3 Wind. Chinese investors expressed strong interest in Excipio’s work, and the company made meaningful progress in advancing international opportunities. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, business momentum was interrupted by the global disruption. In the aftermath, Excipio shifted its focus and moved in a new direction.

US Technical Advisory Group (TAG)

IEC TC 114 Marine Energy

​

The IEC is the world’s leading organization for preparing and publishing international standards across multiple technologies. Roy Robinson of Excipio Energy has been an active member of the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the IEC TC 114 Section on Marine Energy, where the effort centers on developing frameworks for wave, tidal, and ocean thermal energy to ensure these industries have reliable, safe, and globally recognized standards.

Roy brings deep knowledge of offshore oil and gas codes — both U.S. and European — and applies his dedication to help guide the creation of standards that ensure marine energy technologies can be safely deployed and widely adopted, accelerating their path to commercialization.
